How To Photograph A GREAT Sunset

I get asked A Lot how to photograph a good sunset. My answer to that is, photographing a good sunset is easy, just wait until the sun is just about under the horizon and photograph away. NOW, if you want a Great sunset, that’s a different story. A Great sunset doesn’t happen every day. There are certain things that need to be happening at the same time to produce a Great sunset.

First, you need the sun. Well, no kidding, right!? My point is, you don’t need, nor do you want just the sun and a bright blue sky, you need more. Well, what else could there be? You need some clouds too. The clouds are what gives the sky drama and color. How many times have you seen a beautiful sunset right after a thunderstorm or a snow storm clears out? You see, after a good storm the atmosphere is a little cleaner and less polluted, and that helps a lot. But, the clouds, whether they’re big storm clouds, or high thin clouds, you need that for the drama and the color.

Now that you know what to look for, is there anything else? Yes, there is, timing! Wait until the sun is really low in the sky and just about at the horizon. Take a picture every minute or so until the sun has completely set, and then take a few more. Now, turn 180 degrees (directly behind you) and look at the sky. There’s a good chance that the eastern sky will also have some beautiful colors going on (as long as there were some clouds there too).

Now, the last, and one of the most important parts of a getting great sunset image is this, find a location that has something of interest in it. A cityscape, a lake, an ocean, or a mountain are a few good examples. You should also read two of my first blogs that dealt with how to take better pictures parts 1 and 2. They will explain more about how to get good in camera exposures. Once you’re proficient at all of this, adding Adobe Lightroom and or Photoshop to your editing will bring ALL of your images to a whole new level.

If you have a specific area of interest with regard to photography, you’d like me to write about, please lease a comment on Facebook. I’ll do my best to write about it as soon as I can.

Thanks, and have a great day!
